Nunawading supplied bricks and clay to the rest of Australia when it was founded in the 1870s and was known as Tunstall. Located about 18 km east of Melbourne’s central business district, this suburb is governed by the City of Whitehorse. It wasn’t until 1945 that this community, now populated by 10,000 residents, was officially called Nunawading.
Housing development here didn’t really take off until after World War II when residential neighborhoods began replacing the area’s fruit orchards and farmlands. In 1968, Nunawading premiered its Civic Centre, which serves as the administrative centre for the City of Whitehorse. The centre of this suburb’s commercial and shopping activities is Whitehorse Road, nicknamed the Mega Mile. Nunawading is still in the business of brick making in addition to employing workers for its Pacific Brands clothing factory.
Transportation via rail or freeway makes for convenient access to downtown Melbourne. The suburb’s original primary school has merged with Springvale School to create a new Whitehorse Primary Super School. Nunawading is considered an up and coming suburb with many recent developments helping to improve the quality of life here, including a new train station and the arrival of new retail stores including a new Aldi.
The community rallies around the Nunawading Lions Football Club which competes in the Eastern Football League. Nunawading also has the sports distriction of being home to the largest swimming club in the Southern Hemisphere, the Nunawading Swimming Club.
